If I help somebody, that’s mercy for me

On the album, The Odd Couple, there is a song called Charity Case. Like most good songs, its meaning is subjective. For me, the song talks about helping others even when you are struggling.

Charity Case by Gnarls Barkley on Grooveshark

In almost everything I do, I ask myself if I’m doing enough. Part of this comes from my irrational belief of becoming perfect. But, for the most part, I just really want to help others. Over the years, I have had my fingers in more charity pies than I can count. I can honestly and proudly say that I have been on the giving and receiving side of charity and community service. And blogging for me has been no different.

When I first started blogging, I remember writing post and having them just sit out there in blog land unread and unheard of. Then I heard about button swaps. Sounded like a good idea so I sent a couple of emails asking bloggers to swap buttons and every response was a no thank you. You know the lines… “I’m being really selective right now” or “our blogs are not compatible.” Really? My blog talks about the awesomely boring stuff going on in my life and so does yours. How are we not compatible? It really came down to this… your blog has no/low followers, this will not help me so swap with somebody else. I hated that feeling of rejection but I didn’t stop. I ask more bloggers (I still get NO’s) and even I ask a blogger about a paid sponsorship. I got another no…damn, really? Was my blog that bad?  In February, (don’t worry, I’m almost done) I came across Tricia of Mama Marchand’s Nest and she took me on as a sponsor. The first “yes” in a land of “no thanks”. She was very kind, outgoing, and introduced me to some fabulous folks. Tricia, if you are reading, thanks a million!

But back to the original point of this post, helping others. Blogging is hard and it can be discouraging to write posts that no one reads. I can’t prevent everyone from feeling that way but I can make it easier for a couple of folks. At the beginning of this month, I started a new sponsor spot called Fresh and Fabulous. It is for bloggers who are just starting out and its free and first come first serve. They hang out on my sidebar for two months and have the option to write a featured post. For the month of August and September, I’m featuring:

Raquel of Organized Island

Tyler of Rays of Purple

Ashley of Ashley Udoh

If you have time, MAKE TIME, drop by and say hello to these ladies.

Stay Fabulous,
Tranae

  2. What a great idea! It is hard to get a foot in the door as a "new" blog. I'd actually had mine for over two years when I realized there was a whole community out there!
It does seem like sometimes it's a case of "we can't hire you until you get experience"... well then where am I supposed to get experience?!?! I'm gonna check out your sidebar ladies now :)

  7. I can't believe you got that many "no's"! That's not good. I'm glad I didn't run across that when I was first starting out, I would have been crushed!

  9. I love this. Give unto others, and they will give unto you. The blogging world is a community - that's what it's all about. Sure, we want more exposure for our blogs, but you know what? That's not what it's all about. :)
